The “Bolnisi Model – a Successful Example for Local Economic Development,” an EU-funded initiative, recently marked its completion with a forum in Bolnisi. This distinguished gathering brought together esteemed members of the central government, the diplomatic community, various international donors, civil and business sector representatives, alongside officials from the municipalities of Dmanisi, Marneuli, Tetritskaro, and Tsalka.

Over a productive two-year span, the project achieved several milestones. Key among these was:

• Integration of quality control laboratory into the Bolnisi Agrocenter, aimed to elevate the standards of agricultural products such as grain crops, milk, and wine;
• Launch of the www.bolnisiagrocenter.ge online platform that revolutionized the local market dynamics, offering Bolnisi’s agricultural producers a robust digital storefront to showcase their products, while simultaneously simplifying the purchasing process for consumers eager to explore Bolnisi’s offerings.

The project introduced the “Sustainable and Green City” strategy. This initiative saw the rollout of energy-efficient benches and the construction of modern bus stops, that significantly enhanced the town’s infrastructure and aesthetic appeal.

The “Bolnisi Model” project stands as a testament to collaborative financing, boasting an impressive budget of 250,000 euros. This includes 200,000 EURO grant from the European Union, complemented by a 50,000 EURO contribution from the Bolnisi Municipality City Hall, underscoring a joint commitment to fostering local economic growth.

During the event, Davit Sherazadishvili, Mayor of Bolnisi Municipality, opened the floor. He highlighted the project’s impact, extending heartfelt gratitude to the European Union for the unwavering support. Furthermore, he seized the moment to outline an ambitious roadmap for Bolnisi’s future endeavors, hinting at a continued trajectory of growth and innovation.

EUD Representative, Catalin Gherman also greeted the participants. He noted that EU Delegation is always glad to support local economic initiatives. Bolnisi is the only local authority in Georgia that has received funding under the both phases of M4EG. Bolnisi project is successful as it helped local wine producers and farmers to sell products on the market. The action also financed reconstruction of touristic area that attracts local and international visitors.

The fruitful collaboration between the EU and the Bolnisi Municipality City Hall is a good example of efficient partnership for community-focused projects.

Mayors for Economic Growth” is an initiative created in the framework of the EU’s Eastern Partnership and aimed at sustainable municipal development. The initiative targets the economic empowerment of local self-governments; this in turn helps municipalities to plan and implement effective changes in their region. After action plans have been devised, projects developed by the municipalities are implemented with financial support from the EU.
