Georgia obtained the EU candidate status in December 2023, on the understanding that Georgia implements nine steps set out in the European Commission recommendations of November 2023. However, the accession process was de facto halted in June 2024 due to democratic backsliding. Despite these setbacks, the EU continues to support the Georgian population and their democratic and European aspirations. The EU’s doors remain open for Georgia, should the authorities decide to reverse the current course of action.
