EU launches a new Twinning project to support the Establishment of Comprehensive Road Safety Management in Georgia
The EU launches a new Twinning project to assist Georgia in Establishing the Comprehensive Road Safety Management component. The 2-year project “Support in Establishment of Comprehensive Road Safety Database and Further Improvement of Road Safety Management in Georgia”, with a budget of € 1 300 000, aims to improve the policy-making capacity in the field of the road safety at the institutional level, as well as the quality of the crash data collection and analysis methods.
The project will bring Polish and Lithuanian experts together with the Georgian colleagues to improve the policy-making capacity in the field of road safety of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, and LEPL- National Center for Disease Control and Public Health.
Over 65 representatives of the EU, Georgian Government, Embassies, State and Private agencies attended the conference at the Stamba Hotel, launching the new Twinning project in Road Safety.
“This twinning project is dedicated to a very sensitive and immensely significant topic which is road safety. A decrease of a high number of accidents is possible only on fact-based decision making. This project will offer an answer to this demand,” noted Mr. Grzegorz Puda, Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy of Poland.
According to Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Guram Guramishvili. “The EU-funded Twinning project is significant for developing road safety in Georgia. I hope that cooperation will be fruitful and the road safety management component in Georgia, in line with the EU-Georgia Association Agenda, will be enhanced with the support of this project”.
“The EU is very happy to support this very important twinning on Road safety. Every year, unfortunately, too many people in Georgia die or are injured due to traffic accidents. Based on EU experience, there are clear opportunities to improve the situation and reduce the number of road injuries. Combined with EU support for the construction of safer roads in Georgia, this twinning implemented by Polish and Lithuanian partners will permit to ensure better and safer road conditions for all in Georgia”, declared Alexandre Darras, Team Leader in the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.
The Twinning project is implemented by the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy of Poland.
In the course of the next two years, the project will enhance the electronic road safety databases through the capacity building of the relevant personnel involved in road safety data management. Besides, the project aims to develop a well-functioning Road Safety Management system and assist to establish the National Trauma Registry and an effective data management system of national agencies working in the direction of road safety in Georgia.
Kickoff event participants had opportunities to discuss components and activities to be implemented within the framework of the project and their expected results.
