Progress on Water and Sanitation Systems in Khashuri – funded by the EU and AFD

13/03/2024

The construction works for the rehabilitation and expansion of the water supply and associated infrastructure in the city of Khashuri, officially launched in 2023, is progressing: more than 60 km of networks are already built.

Construction of the pipes network will ensure a better access to drinking water and sanitation services for the population of Khashuri and surrounding villages.

The project is implemented by the state-owned operator of water and wastewater infrastructure United Water Supply Company of Georgia (UWSCG) and co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

In Khashuri and the neighboring settlements, water is currently only supplied a few hours per day and wastewater is discharged without treatment into a transboundary river, affecting negatively the environment, the local livelihood and the health of populations.

Thanks to the European Union providing a €7.15 million grant through AFD and AFD with a credit line of €65 million, UWSCG can ensure a sustainable and efficient operation and maintenance of water and sanitation systems.

The next phases of the project are also under preparation as Khashuri targets a 24/7 drinking water supply and access to high quality sanitation services. The construction of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) will mitigate the impact on the environment and ensure the discharge of treated wastewater into the river.
