Supporting the Government of Georgia in the Further Development of Border and Migration Management Capacities

Project Description
With the support of the EU, IOM and UNHCR will engage with the Government of Georgia in solidifying its capacities to strengthen the security of its borders through a vast range of technical assistance provision based on identified needs and gaps, while at the same time strengthening rights protection mechanisms. In parallel, IOM and UNHCR will enhance capacities of state bodies responsible for migration management to develop policies based on solid data analysis, while at the same time further developing potentials to manage (inter alia) labour migration, return migration in the context of Georgia's socio-economic development and the country's asylum system. Good governance, gender equality and respect for human rights will be overarching principles of all project interventions.
Specific Objective
The overall objective of this action is to support the Government of Georgia in sustaining more effective integrated border management and migration governance in Georgia.

The action will contribute towards the achievement of the following specific objectives (outcomes):
1) Georgian national authorities’ effectiveness in managing and securing borders is improved.
2) The Government of Georgia‘s policies, their implementation, and intra-governmental coordination for safe and orderly migration and sustainable return and reintegration of Georgian citizens, based on sound data generation and analysis, are improved.
3) Access of migrants of all genders, ages, abilities, and other diversities to human-rights compliant protection mechanisms is increased.
Expected Results
This project aims to achieve increased capacities in the relevant state entities responsible for border and migration management to secure compliance with visa-free travel benchmarks. Key thematic areas of concern will be integrated border management based on identified needs and gaps, improvement of the asylum management system, technical assistance and public awareness-raising on visa-free travel to the EU, further development of Georgia's capacities to manage labour as well as return migration, while at the same time strengthening migrant rights protection mechanisms.
