ABOUT

Established in 2012, the EU Prize for Journalism is an annual event that encourages professionalism and ethical conduct in Georgian journalism, organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. The rules of the EU Prize for Journalism have been inspired by the principles of the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics and seek to encourage professionalism and ethics in the Georgian Journalism.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Only citizens of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, aged 18 years or older. Entries must have been originally published/ broadcast/ posted between 30 November, 2023 and 10  October, 2024 inclusive.

Winners of the EU Prize will be revealed in 7 categories.

Each applicant can submit only one entry to only one of the following Prize Categories:

  1. Best story in print or online media;
    B. Best feature story in broadcast or online media;
    C. Best investigative story in print, online, or broadcast media;
    D. Best blog, opinion or column in print, online or broadcast media;
    E. The most innovative and original piece of work in print, broadcast or online media;
    F. Best documentary photo reflecting shared values (Human rights, including minority rights, social justice, respect for human dignity, freedom of speech, democracy, equality and rule of law) and published in print or online media;
    G. Best Student work in print, online or broadcast media.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Entries must be in Georgian and  English languages. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Applicants may submit only their own work.

It is mandatory for applicants to indicate the name and surname of a co-author/s (if any) in the special field indicated in the application form.

A co-author is a person who has participated in the creation of a journalistic work submitted to the competition (video editor, cameraman, photographer, additional/second author, etc.) .

An editor cannot be regarded as a co-author.

A team of co-authors should  not exceed three (3) members; In case of winning, the whole team will receive the monetary prize. 

Members of the team having applied for one category will not be eligible to apply for other categories.

By submitting an entry, the participant acknowledges that he or she has read and understood the rules, conditions and procedures of the EU Prize for Journalism.

Note: The winners (or co-authors of the winners) of 2022 and 2023 EU Prize for Journalism will not be eligible to participate as authors or co-authors.

Jury members and staff of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, and any contractors, grantees, or other organisations directly involved with the contest are not eligible to take part.

CRITERIA

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  1.  
    1. For Categories (A), (B), (C), (E) the criteria will be as follows: adherence to facts, depth of reporting, focus; fairness and balance; creativity and style; impact;
    2. For Category (D) creativity and style; impact;
    3. For Category (F) the criteria will be as follows: creativity and expressiveness; impact; addressing EU values (human rights, including minority rights, social justice, respect for human dignity, freedom of speech, democracy, equality and rule of law);
    4. For Category (G) the criteria will be as follows:  adherence to facts, depth of reporting, focus; fairness and balance; creativity and style.

PRIZE

One winner will be announced for each Prize Category.

The prizes are as follows: Categories (A), (B), (C), (D), (E), (F), (G): cash prizes.

SELECTION PROCESS
Applications are judged by a panel of independent jury, composed of European and Georgian media professionals, and will act in an advisory function. The opinions of the jury will be submitted to the EU Delegation, who will take them into account when deciding on the winners.  These decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

The winner in each respective category will be announced in 2024 at a public award ceremony which will be advertised on eu4georgia.ge/euprizeforjournalism/

CLOSING DATE
The deadline for entries is October 10, 2024.

The European Union reserves the right to reproduce entries in part or as a whole for the purpose of promoting the EU Journalism Prize and other activities funded by the European Union.
